A repudiated LIC death claim does not always have to jump straight from the branch office to an outside forum. LIC operates an internal review mechanism for repudiated death claims through its Claims Dispute Redressal Committees, or CDRCs.
The value of a CDRC appeal is not that it creates a new policy benefit. It gives the claimant a structured opportunity to show that the repudiation relied on the wrong facts, an incomplete investigation, a misread declaration, an incorrect policy-status conclusion, or an interpretation that does not fit the evidence.

If your LIC issue is delay, investigation or a broader repudiation problem, start with our LIC claim rejection, delay and investigation guide.
First, Use the Current Name: Claims Dispute Redressal Committee
You may still find LIC webpages using the older label 'Claims Review Committees'. That wording appears on some legacy claims and policy-condition pages.
LIC's current dedicated internal-review page and newer product brochures use the name Claims Dispute Redressal Committee. For a present-day appeal, I would use 'ZO-CDRC' or 'CO-CDRC' in the subject line and quote the address given in the repudiation communication.
| LIC wording you may see | What it means today |
| Claims Review Committee / Review Committee | Legacy terminology still visible on older/static LIC pages |
| Claims Dispute Redressal Committee (CDRC) | Current terminology on LIC's dedicated review page and newer brochures |
| ZO-CDRC | Zonal Office Claims Dispute Redressal Committee |
| CO-CDRC | Central Office Claims Dispute Redressal Committee at LIC Central Office, Mumbai |
Which LIC Claims Can Go to CDRC?
LIC describes the CDRC mechanism as an internal review system for repudiated death claims. That distinction matters.
| Problem | CDRC fit? | Better first route if not |
| Death claim formally repudiated | Yes — this is the core CDRC use case | ZO-CDRC address supplied with repudiation |
| Death claim under investigation but no final repudiation yet | Not yet a repudiation review | Servicing branch / grievance route; track investigation timeline |
| Death claim delayed after all requirements | Generally a service/grievance issue rather than CDRC review | LIC grievance, Bima Bharosa, Ombudsman if eligible |
| Maturity / survival benefit dispute | CDRC is not described by LIC as the route for these claims | LIC grievance / Ombudsman if eligible |
| Accident rider amount rejected as part of a death claim | Potentially relevant if the decision is a formal repudiation of the death-related rider benefit | Use the exact repudiation communication and rider evidence |
| Short payment caused by benefit calculation | Depends on whether LIC has actually repudiated part of the death claim | Seek written calculation/decision; grievance or Ombudsman may be more direct |
How LIC's Current CDRC Structure Works
LIC says the Claims Dispute Redressal Committee operates at its Corporate/Central Office and at all eight Zonal Offices.
| Level | Location / role |
| ZO-CDRC | Zonal Office committee at Delhi, Kanpur, Bhopal, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Patna |
| CO-CDRC | Central Office Claims Dispute Redressal Committee at LIC Central Office, Mumbai |
| Committee composition | Senior LIC officials plus a retired District Court or High Court Judge |
| Starting point after repudiation | LIC says the claimant is informed of the grounds and provided the relevant ZO-CDRC address for appeal |
| If ZO-CDRC upholds repudiation | LIC says the next route depends on the net claim amount: Ombudsman or CO-CDRC |
| If CO-CDRC upholds repudiation | LIC says the claimant is then provided the Insurance Ombudsman address |
LIC does not publish the net-claim-amount cut-off on the current dedicated CDRC webpage. Do not guess it. Use the repudiation or ZO-CDRC decision letter to identify whether LIC is directing you to CO-CDRC or to the Ombudsman.
A CDRC Appeal Is Not Just a Complaint Letter
A grievance says you are unhappy. A strong CDRC appeal shows why the repudiation decision should change.
| Appeal element | What to put in it |
| Decision being challenged | Repudiation letter date, policy number, claim number and exact ground |
| Policy rule | The clause, Section 45 issue, rider condition or policy-status rule LIC relied upon |
| Fact correction | What LIC has factually misunderstood or left unresolved |
| Evidence | Proposal form, medical records, premium ledger, revival file, employer record, police record, hospital file, etc. |
| Causation | Why the alleged non-disclosure/default/exclusion actually caused or did not cause the repudiation issue |
| Relief requested | Review and reversal of repudiation, or a reasoned fresh decision on the disputed ground |
| Annexure index | Numbered list so every factual statement can be traced to a document |
Start With the Repudiation Letter, Not With Emotion
The most useful sentence in the repudiation letter is the one that tells you why LIC refused the claim. Build the appeal around that sentence.
| Repudiation reason | Question the CDRC appeal should answer |
| Material non-disclosure / false statement | What exact answer was allegedly false, what evidence proves that, and how does Section 45 apply? |
| Pre-existing disease / prior treatment | Was the condition actually known to the life assured at proposal or revival, and was the question specific enough? |
| Policy lapsed / unpaid premium | What was the due date, grace period, paid-up status, lapse concession and revival status? |
| Recent revival / reinstatement | What declarations were made at revival and what is the correct Section 45 clock? |
| Accidental death rider rejected | Did the event meet the accident definition, 180-day rule, in-force condition and exclusions? |
| Suspected fraud / fabricated documents | Which document is alleged to be false and what independent verification supports that allegation? |
| Cause of death inconsistent with records | Which contemporaneous medical record should control and why? |
| Nominee/legal-heir documentation issue | Is this really a repudiation of liability, or only a title/claimant-document requirement? |
For disputes based on alleged misstatement or suppression, see our Section 45 life-insurance claim rejection guide.
The Appeal File Should Reconstruct the Entire Decision
| Document | Why it matters |
| Repudiation letter | Defines the decision under review |
| Policy bond / schedule | Confirms plan, dates and benefits |
| Proposal form and declarations | Critical for non-disclosure cases |
| Revival / reinstatement declaration, if relevant | Critical where the repudiation relies on post-revival statements |
| Premium ledger | Necessary for lapse/grace/paid-up disputes |
| Death certificate | Basic claim chronology |
| Claim forms and claimant statement | Shows what was declared at claim stage |
| Hospital and medical records | Tests disease history, cause of death and alleged non-disclosure |
| Medical attendant / hospital certificates | Often part of early-death investigation |
| Investigator material supplied or quoted by LIC | Shows the evidentiary basis of repudiation |
| Employer records, if relevant | Work absence, group cover, occupation or salary-saving issues |
| FIR / post-mortem / inquest, if relevant | Accidental or unnatural death evidence |
| Previous grievance correspondence | Shows what LIC has already been asked to address |
| One-page chronology | Lets the committee understand dates before reading annexures |
How to Structure the CDRC Representation
| Section | What to write |
| 1. Identification | Policy number, life assured, claimant, claim number, branch and repudiation date |
| 2. Decision challenged | Quote or accurately summarise the repudiation ground |
| 3. Short chronology | Proposal, policy commencement, premiums/revival, illness/accident, death, claim, investigation and repudiation |
| 4. Issue 1 | First factual/legal error, followed immediately by supporting document references |
| 5. Issue 2 | Second error; avoid mixing unrelated allegations |
| 6. Policy / statutory position | Only the clause or Section 45 point genuinely relevant to the case |
| 7. Evidence LIC has not reconciled | Contradictory hospital dates, ledger entries, investigator statements, etc. |
| 8. Relief | Request review of repudiation and a reasoned revised decision |
| 9. Annexures | Numbered list matching every citation in the appeal |
ZO-CDRC Comes First Under LIC's Published Internal Process
LIC's current dedicated page says that whenever a death claim is repudiated, the claimant is informed of the grounds and given the address of the Zonal Office CDRC to prefer an appeal.
That means the repudiation letter itself is an important procedural document. Keep the page showing the CDRC address and any instructions. If the letter omits the review route, ask LIC in writing for the correct ZO-CDRC address rather than sending the appeal to a random office.
What Happens After the ZO-CDRC Decision?
If ZO-CDRC reverses the repudiation, LIC should act on the reviewed claim decision subject to any remaining claim formalities.
If ZO-CDRC upholds repudiation, LIC's current page says the next route depends on the net claim amount. The claimant is given either the Insurance Ombudsman address or the CO-CDRC address. If CO-CDRC also upholds repudiation, LIC says the claimant is given the Ombudsman address.
Do You Have to Finish CDRC Before Going to the Insurance Ombudsman?
Not necessarily. This is where LIC's internal process and the Ombudsman's jurisdiction need to be kept separate.
The Council for Insurance Ombudsmen currently says you must first complain to the insurer. If you are dissatisfied with the insurer's solution, or there is no response within 30 days, an eligible complainant may approach the Ombudsman, subject to the ₹50 lakh monetary limit, one-year filing rule and other conditions.
The CIO procedure does not state that a claimant must complete ZO-CDRC and CO-CDRC before filing. CDRC can still be strategically useful because it creates an internal merits review and may resolve the repudiation without an outside proceeding.
| Point | LIC CDRC | Insurance Ombudsman |
| Nature | LIC internal review mechanism | External grievance-redress forum under Ombudsman framework |
| Core LIC use | Repudiated death claims | Eligible insurance grievances including claim repudiation |
| Insurer-first requirement | Built into LIC's own process | Yes — complaint to insurer first |
| 30-day no-response trigger | Not stated by LIC as the CDRC trigger | Current CIO procedure allows Ombudsman approach after 30 days without insurer response |
| Monetary limit | LIC public CDRC page does not state a general cap | Current CIO limit is ₹50 lakh including expenses |
| Cost to claimant | Internal review | No filing fee |
| Need to complete CO-CDRC first? | Depends on LIC's internal route after ZO-CDRC | CIO procedure does not list full CDRC exhaustion as a precondition |
Where LIC Grievance Redressal Fits In
A CDRC appeal is a merits review of a repudiated death claim. LIC's ordinary grievance system remains useful for service failures, missing records, failure to provide the repudiation basis, incorrect contact details or non-response.
LIC's current Customers Corner lists co_complaints@licindia.com and call centre 022 6827 6827. LIC's 2024 Citizens' Charter sets same-day acknowledgement for complaints and a 14-day benchmark for action and communication of the decision.
Bima Bharosa can also create an IRDAI-visible grievance trail. IRDAI currently lists 155255, 1800 4254 732 and complaints@irdai.gov.in.
Common CDRC Appeal Mistakes
| Mistake | Better approach |
| Sending only the repudiation letter and saying it is unfair | Attach the evidence that directly answers the repudiation ground |
| Arguing every possible law at once | Use only the clause/statute that applies |
| No chronology | Put proposal, revival, treatment, death and claim dates on one page |
| Ignoring a damaging medical record | Address it directly and reconcile it with the rest of the evidence |
| Assuming Section 45 automatically guarantees payment | Section 45 controls when/how a policy can be called in question; entitlement still depends on facts and policy terms |
| Calling a service delay 'CDRC appeal' before repudiation | Use grievance/Ombudsman channels until there is an actual repudiation decision |
| Guessing the CO-CDRC amount threshold | Follow LIC's written route after ZO-CDRC |
| Waiting so long that outside limitation becomes risky | Track Ombudsman/consumer limitation while the internal review is running |
14-Day Action Plan After a Death Claim Repudiation
| Day | Action |
| Day 1 | Read the repudiation letter line by line and preserve the ZO-CDRC address/instructions. |
| Day 2 | Collect policy bond, proposal form, claim forms and complete premium ledger. |
| Day 3 | Build a one-page chronology from proposal/revival to death and repudiation. |
| Day 4 | Identify the exact repudiation ground and policy/statutory provision LIC relies on. |
| Day 5 | Collect the primary evidence that answers that ground. |
| Day 6 | Obtain missing hospital, employer, police or revival records. |
| Day 7 | Create an issue table: LIC allegation / your evidence / unresolved contradiction. |
| Day 8 | Draft the ZO-CDRC appeal with numbered annexures. |
| Day 9 | Cross-check every factual assertion against a document. |
| Day 10 | Remove emotional repetition and unsupported legal conclusions. |
| Day 11 | Submit using the address/method provided by LIC and obtain proof of delivery. |
| Day 12 | Register an ordinary LIC grievance if records, reasoning or acknowledgement are missing. |
| Day 13 | Check Ombudsman eligibility, ₹50 lakh limit and one-year limitation separately. |
| Day 14 | Calendar follow-up dates and preserve the complete appeal bundle exactly as filed. |
Can TatkalClaims Help With an LIC CDRC Appeal?
Yes. The useful work is usually forensic rather than cosmetic: identifying what LIC actually relied on, finding the record that contradicts or supports that conclusion, and deciding whether the dispute is factual, medical, policy-status related or a Section 45 issue.
TatkalClaims can review the repudiation letter, proposal/revival declarations, premium history, medical file, investigator material and claim correspondence, then turn the file into a structured ZO-CDRC representation with a chronology and numbered evidence map.
We can also assess whether continuing the internal CDRC route is sensible or whether an eligible Ombudsman complaint should be prepared in parallel from a limitation-planning perspective. We will not claim that CDRC guarantees reversal or that every repudiated death claim has a strong appeal.
For an initial review, call +91 7207382073 or email help@tatkalclaims.com. Send the repudiation letter, policy schedule, proposal/revival forms if available, death certificate and the key evidence LIC relied on.
Frequently asked questions
Is LIC's Claims Review Committee the same as the Claims Dispute Redressal Committee?
They refer to the same broad internal-review function across different generations of LIC material, but LIC's current dedicated page and newer product brochures use the name Claims Dispute Redressal Committee (CDRC). Use the current ZO-CDRC/CO-CDRC terminology in a fresh appeal unless your own repudiation letter instructs otherwise.
Can I use CDRC for a death claim that is only delayed and not repudiated?
CDRC is described by LIC as a review mechanism for repudiated death claims. A delayed or still-investigated claim is generally better handled first through LIC grievance channels, Bima Bharosa and, where eligible, the Insurance Ombudsman.
Does LIC have CDRC at every branch?
No. LIC says ZO-CDRC functions at all eight Zonal Offices, while CO-CDRC functions at Central Office in Mumbai. The repudiation communication should provide the relevant Zonal CDRC address.
Who sits on LIC's CDRC?
LIC says the committee includes senior officials at the Zonal or Central Office and a retired District Court or High Court Judge.
Do I have to complete CO-CDRC before approaching the Insurance Ombudsman?
Current CIO procedure requires you to complain to the insurer first and then permits an eligible Ombudsman complaint if the response is unsatisfactory or no response is received within 30 days. It does not state that every LIC internal CDRC stage must first be exhausted. Check limitation and forum strategy for the specific case.
What if the ZO-CDRC upholds repudiation?
LIC's current page says the next route depends on the net claim amount: the claimant is directed either to the Insurance Ombudsman or to CO-CDRC. If CO-CDRC also upholds repudiation, LIC says the Ombudsman address is provided.
Sources & Methodology
Primary-source review completed 5 October 2026. LIC's current dedicated internal-review page was treated as the controlling source for present terminology and CDRC structure. Older LIC pages that still use 'Claims Review Committee' were retained only to explain the naming mismatch. Current Ombudsman procedure was checked directly with the Council for Insurance Ombudsmen because LIC's own CDRC page still displays an outdated ₹20 lakh Ombudsman figure.
Disclaimer: This guide explains LIC's internal review process for repudiated death claims in general terms. The route in an individual case depends on the repudiation letter, claim amount, policy facts, evidence, applicable law and limitation periods. CDRC is an internal LIC mechanism and does not guarantee reversal. This guide is not legal advice.
