A National Insurance claim rejection, delay or short settlement should be challenged according to the policy type and the exact reason given. National Insurance writes health, motor, property and other general-insurance business, so the evidence needed for a medical reimbursement dispute is different from the evidence needed for a vehicle, theft or fire-loss dispute even though the insurer grievance route is common.
First: Identify What Happened to Your National Insurance Claim
| Claim problem | What it usually means | Best first move |
|---|---|---|
| Cashless health request denied | Cashless authorisation was refused; reimbursement may still require separate assessment | Get the denial reason and preserve the complete hospital file |
| Reimbursement or indemnity claim rejected | A final adverse claim decision has been issued | Challenge the exact clause, medical finding or document deficiency |
| Claim partly paid | The claim was admitted but deductions, depreciation, limits or assessment reduced the payout | Ask for the calculation, surveyor/TPA basis and clause for each deduction |
| Claim pending | No final approval, repudiation or settlement has been communicated | Build a dated chronology and escalate the delay separately |
If you first need the general framework for challenging a repudiation, use our complete insurance claim rejection guide.
Step 1: Get the Rejection, Deduction or Delay Position in Writing
Record the policy number, claim number, date of loss or hospitalisation, amount claimed, amount approved, date of decision, and the exact rejection or deduction reason. If a branch, TPA, surveyor or claims team has communicated only a verbal explanation, ask for the written basis and the policy clause, medical reasoning or assessment relied upon.
Prepare a short chronology and a numbered evidence index instead of simply resending the entire claim file. Link every disputed point to the document that answers it: medical records and treating-doctor clarifications for health claims, repair and survey evidence for motor claims, and stock, valuation or loss records for property claims.
Step 2: Use National Insurance’s Internal Grievance Route
National Insurance’s current grievance structure starts with the Policy Issuing Office or the appropriate grievance cell. If the issue is not resolved, the complaint can be escalated through the insurer’s Regional/Head Office grievance structure, including the CRM Department and Grievance Redressal Officer at Head Office.
National Insurance also provides an online grievance registration and status-tracking system. IRDAI’s current GRO directory lists griho@nic.co.in and toll-free 1800 345 0330 for National Insurance grievance escalation. Officer names can change, so verify the current insurer or IRDAI grievance page before sending a high-level complaint.
Carry the same claim number, grievance reference, chronology and requested remedy through every level. Save acknowledgements, complaint numbers, emails and final replies. This written trail matters because the Insurance Ombudsman process requires you to have first complained to the insurer.
Health Claims: Challenge the Exact Medical or Policy Reason
For a National Insurance health claim, identify whether the dispute concerns cashless authorisation, reimbursement assessment, pre-existing disease, alleged non-disclosure, waiting period, medical necessity, the need for hospitalisation, missing documents or an exclusion. The appeal should answer that precise medical and contractual issue rather than make a general request to reconsider the claim.
Where the insurer relies on a medical conclusion, compare the proposal disclosures and policy wording with the contemporaneous treatment record. If the hospital record is ambiguous, a treating-doctor clarification should explain the diagnosis, clinical timeline, why the treatment was necessary and why the chosen mode of treatment was appropriate.
If only cashless authorisation was denied, do not automatically treat that as final repudiation of reimbursement. Our cashless-to-reimbursement guide explains what to preserve and how the two stages differ.
Current IRDAI health guidance lists 15 days for settlement of claims other than cashless. For a delayed reimbursement claim, record when the complete claim file and every subsequent document were submitted so the delay can be measured against the current standard.
If a health claim was admitted but short-settled, reconstruct the payout line by line. Separate co-pay, deductible, room-rent or proportionate deductions, sub-limits, non-payables and exclusions. Use our health-insurance short-settlement guide to audit the calculation before escalating.
Motor Claims: Audit the Surveyor’s Assessment, Not Just the Final Number
National Insurance’s published surveyor guidance says surveyors assess the cause and quantum of loss, admissibility under the policy, underinsurance, depreciation, salvage and compliance with policy warranties. That makes the survey or assessment basis central to many motor and property disputes.
For motor own-damage or theft disputes, identify whether the rejection concerns coverage, delayed intimation, driving licence, vehicle use, repair before inspection, theft documentation, depreciation, salvage or the surveyor’s quantification. Compare the assessment with photographs, repair estimates, invoices, RC, driving licence, FIR and non-traceable records as relevant.
For the evidence sequence after a vehicle theft—including FIR, insurer intimation and non-traceable documentation—use our car-theft insurance claim process guide.
Tatkal Claims already has a National Insurance case study involving a stolen SUV and a policy-transfer dispute. It is useful as a case-specific example, but the outcome should not be treated as a substitute for checking your own policy facts and transfer chronology.
A second Tatkal Claims case study covers a vehicle-theft claim rejected over the way the car had been parked. Use it to understand how claim reasoning can be challenged, not as a guarantee that a different theft claim will succeed.
Fire, Property and Other General-Insurance Claims: Rebuild the Loss Assessment
For fire, burglary, shop, property or business-loss disputes, start with the repudiation or settlement letter and identify whether the disagreement concerns cause of loss, policy warranty, underinsurance, average clause, stock records, valuation, salvage, excluded property, delayed intimation or the surveyor’s quantification.
Rebuild the loss from contemporaneous evidence: fire brigade or police records where applicable, photographs and video, purchase invoices, stock registers, GST or accounting records, repair or replacement quotations, survey correspondence and the policy schedule. Challenge the exact assessment point rather than simply demanding a higher settlement.
Step 3: Escalate an Unresolved National Insurance Grievance to Bima Bharosa
If the insurer-level grievance does not produce a satisfactory resolution, the policyholder can register the complaint through IRDAI’s Bima Bharosa platform. The portal creates a trackable regulatory grievance record; it should not be described as an automatic order directing National Insurance to pay the claim.
Bima Bharosa’s current dashboard says a complaint will be attended to within 14 days, while its FAQ describes a 15-day insurer-resolution expectation. These statements refer to related but not identical grievance stages, so keep the insurer acknowledgement and complaint dates rather than treating one number as a universal payment deadline.
For the practical difference between regulatory grievance tracking and independent redressal, read Bima Bharosa vs Insurance Ombudsman.
Step 4: Check Whether the Insurance Ombudsman Fits Your Case
The Council for Insurance Ombudsmen says you should first complain to the insurer or insurance broker. If you are dissatisfied with the response, or there is no response within 30 days, an eligible complaint can be taken to the Ombudsman. Current CIO guidance states that the value of the claim including expenses should not exceed ₹50 lakh and that the complaint should be filed within one year from rejection, repudiation or partial settlement, subject to the applicable procedure.
The Ombudsman route is not mechanically available for every commercial policy. Current CIO procedure identifies eligible complainants including personal-lines policyholders, group policyholders, sole proprietorships and micro enterprises. It also says the same subject matter should not already have been taken to another forum, court or arbitrator.
If the Ombudsman route fits your case, use our step-by-step Insurance Ombudsman complaint guide for jurisdiction, documents and filing checks.
A Practical National Insurance Appeal Structure
- Identify the policy, insured person or asset, claim number and exact decision you are challenging.
- Quote National Insurance’s rejection reason, survey finding or disputed deduction exactly.
- Explain why the reason is factually, medically, technically or contractually incorrect.
- Attach a numbered evidence index that directly answers each disputed point.
- State the remedy you want: reconsideration, recalculation, a reasoned review, release of pending payment or payment of the disputed admissible amount.
- Preserve every issuing-office, Regional Office, CRM/GRO, Bima Bharosa and Ombudsman reference for the next stage.
Your 7-Day Action Plan After a National Insurance Claim Rejection
Day 1: collect the policy schedule, wording and rejection or settlement letter. Day 2: build a dated claim chronology. Day 3: identify the exact disputed clause, medical conclusion, survey finding or deduction. Day 4: obtain the missing medical, technical, repair, police, stock or valuation evidence. Day 5: prepare a point-by-point representation. Day 6: submit it through the issuing office or appropriate National Insurance grievance channel and save proof. Day 7: calendar the insurer follow-up, Bima Bharosa and Ombudsman deadlines that may apply.
When Tatkal Claims Can Help
If the rejection reason is unclear, the medical or survey evidence is disputed, the deduction is difficult to reconstruct, or repeated grievance attempts have not resolved the matter, Tatkal Claims can help review the documents, identify the disputed issue and structure the next escalation.
No appeal or claim-resolution service can guarantee payment. The outcome depends on the policy wording, claim type, facts, evidence, applicable regulations, limitation periods and the forum that ultimately reviews the dispute.
Frequently asked questions
Where should I first complain about a rejected National Insurance claim?
Start with the Policy Issuing Office or the appropriate National Insurance grievance cell. If the issue remains unresolved, escalate through the insurer’s Regional/Head Office grievance structure, including CRM/GRO channels.
Can I register and track a National Insurance grievance online?
Yes. National Insurance’s current website links to an online grievance registration and status-tracking system in addition to office, email and telephone channels.
What email can I use for a National Insurance grievance escalation?
IRDAI’s current GRO directory lists griho@nic.co.in for National Insurance. Verify the current insurer or IRDAI grievance directory before a high-level escalation because contact and officer details can change.
Does a denied National Insurance cashless request automatically reject reimbursement?
Not necessarily. Cashless is a settlement facility. Depending on the policy terms and facts, a reimbursement claim may still require separate assessment. Preserve the denial reason, hospital papers, bills and payment receipts.
Can a National Insurance short-settlement dispute go to the Insurance Ombudsman?
Partial settlement falls within the Ombudsman complaint framework, subject to eligibility, the prior-insurer-complaint requirement, the ₹50 lakh monetary limit, the one-year filing window and the other current CIO conditions.
What should I ask for if I disagree with a National Insurance surveyor’s assessment?
Ask for the assessment basis available to you and identify the exact point you dispute—such as cause of loss, underinsurance, depreciation, salvage, admissibility, valuation or a policy warranty. Support the challenge with photographs, invoices, repair estimates, stock records or other contemporaneous evidence relevant to the claim.
