If Universal Sompo General Insurance Company Limited has rejected your insurance claim, reduced the amount payable, delayed settlement or denied a cashless request, the first decision does not necessarily have to be the final word.
A useful appeal starts with the precise reason given by Universal Sompo. Identify the policy clause, medical conclusion, survey finding, documentation issue or deduction relied upon by the insurer and answer that specific point with evidence.
Universal Sompo currently provides a structured grievance route through customer service, its Grievance Cell and its Grievance Redressal Officer, with additional branch-level grievance support.
First: Identify What Happened to Your Universal Sompo Claim
| Claim problem | What to obtain | What the appeal should examine |
|---|---|---|
| Claim rejected completely | Repudiation/rejection letter | Exact exclusion, condition or factual basis |
| Claim short-settled | Settlement sheet and calculation | Each deduction and its policy basis |
| Cashless request denied | Cashless decision/query | Whether only cashless was denied or the underlying claim was rejected |
| Health reimbursement delayed | Acknowledgement and document trail | Date all necessary documents were received |
| PED/non-disclosure rejection | Proposal form and medical records | What was asked, disclosed and relied upon |
| Motor repair claim reduced | Survey report/assessment and repair estimate | Depreciation, excluded damage and repair valuation |
| Theft claim delayed | FIR, police papers and insurer correspondence | Reporting and documentation requirements |
| Total-loss/CTL dispute | Survey report, IDV and repair estimate | 75% IDV threshold, salvage and valuation |

Universal Sompo's Claim Numbers Need Context
Nyvo's current three-year weighted comparison lists Universal Sompo at a 90.3% claim settlement ratio and approximately 5.1 complaints per 10,000 claims.
These are aggregate company-level indicators. They do not determine whether your particular health or motor claim is payable. A settlement ratio and complaint ratio provide insurer-level context; they are not a prediction of the outcome of an individual disputed claim.
Step 1: Get the Exact Rejection, Deduction or Delay Reason
Do not appeal only by stating that Universal Sompo's decision is unfair. Ask the insurer to identify the exact policy clause relied upon, the exclusion, warranty or condition applied, the factual or medical basis of the rejection, any alleged non-disclosure, any missing document, the survey conclusion in a motor claim, and the calculation used for a short settlement.
For a partly paid claim, request a complete settlement sheet. For a motor claim, obtain the survey assessment where relevant. For a health claim, obtain the medical basis of any waiting-period, pre-existing-disease, non-disclosure, sub-limit or other deduction.
A good appeal challenges the reasoning, not merely the final amount.
Step 2: Register the Complaint With Universal Sompo
Universal Sompo's published customer-service channels include 1800-200-4030 / 1800-22-4030 and contactus@universalsompo.com. Its live grievance page describes the assistance numbers as available 24/7.
When the dispute concerns a claim, Universal Sompo also publishes contactclaims@universalsompo.com as a claims contact.
Your written complaint should include the policy number, claim number, date of hospitalisation, accident, theft or other loss, amount claimed, amount paid if any, date of rejection or short settlement, exact decision being challenged, relevant policy clause, supporting documents and exact correction requested.
Ask for an acknowledgement or service-request reference and keep it.
Senior-Citizen Grievance Channel
Universal Sompo currently publishes a dedicated senior-citizen toll-free number, 1800-267-4030, and seniorcitizen@universalsompo.com.
Where the insured is a senior citizen, use the dedicated channel while preserving the same written documentation and complaint chronology.
Step 3: Escalate to Universal Sompo's Grievance Cell
Current Universal Sompo policy and Customer Information Sheet material provides a second escalation stage through its Grievance Cell at grievance@universalsompo.com.
Universal Sompo states that after examining a grievance at this level, its final response should be communicated within two weeks from receipt of the complaint on that email ID.
The insurer's grievance material also says a policyholder may visit a branch and request to meet the Branch Grievance Redressal Officer.
When escalating, forward the first complaint and Universal Sompo's response. Do not restart the case from zero. Explain what Universal Sompo decided, what you challenged, what the first response failed to address, what evidence supports your position and what outcome you are requesting.
Step 4: Escalate to the Grievance Redressal Officer
If the dispute remains unresolved, Universal Sompo currently publishes the role-based grievance contact gro@universalsompo.com.
Recent Universal Sompo policy material describes this as the next escalation where the policyholder is dissatisfied with the earlier decision or has not received a response within the stated period.
Use the role-based contact rather than relying on an individual officer's name, because personnel can change.
How Long Should Universal Sompo Take to Resolve a Grievance?
Universal Sompo's current live grievance page publishes immediate written acknowledgement, a request for further details within one week if required, resolution and a final resolution letter within two weeks, and closure for non-response by the complainant at eight weeks under the stated process.
Some Universal Sompo policy materials separately state escalation to the GRO where the customer has not received a response within 15 working days.
IRDAI's Bima Bharosa guidance separately says that the insurer should resolve a grievance within 15 days of receipt.
Universal Sompo Health Claim Disputes
Universal Sompo's current claims page publishes a dedicated health claim Turn Around Time table. It currently states initial cashless authorisation at 60 minutes, discharge request at 3 hours and claim settlement at 15 days.
These are service timelines. They do not mean that every requested amount must be admitted. Coverage still depends on the policy terms, medical facts, exclusions, waiting periods, limits and supporting evidence.
Cashless Rejection Does Not Necessarily Mean Final Claim Rejection
Cashless authorisation is a method of settling an eligible hospital claim directly with the hospital. A cashless denial may arise because the insurer needs more information, cannot approve the request through the cashless route or considers part of the requested treatment inadmissible.
Where reimbursement remains available under the policy, the policyholder may still be able to pay the hospital and subsequently submit a reimbursement claim. Preserve the pre-authorisation request, cashless denial or query, health card details, hospital records, discharge summary, diagnostic reports, final bill, receipts and Universal Sompo correspondence.

Universal Sompo Health Claim Contacts
Universal Sompo's health-claim material currently publishes health helpline 1800-200-4030 and healthserve@universalsompo.com.
Its current claims page also lists the documents typically required for reimbursement, including hospital records, bills, investigation reports, NEFT details and KYC material, while stating that further documents may be requested where necessary.
Health Reimbursement Timeline: Use the Current TAT Table
Universal Sompo's current claims-page TAT table states 15 days for claim settlement.
However, an older FAQ section that remains visible on the same claims page says that bills are normally settled within seven working days of receiving the relevant documents and contains an older cashless admissibility reference of three to six hours.
Because Universal Sompo's newer dedicated TAT panel states 60 minutes, 3 hours and 15 days, that is the clearer current operational reference.
If a delay becomes part of your grievance, preserve the date on which Universal Sompo received the final necessary document and ask the insurer to identify the applicable TAT for your claim.
Pre-Existing Disease and Non-Disclosure Disputes
If Universal Sompo rejects a health claim because of an alleged pre-existing illness or non-disclosure, obtain the proposal form, declarations made when the policy was purchased, previous medical records, records from the current admission, rejection letter, policy wording and relevant waiting-period provisions.
The question is not merely whether an old medical entry exists. A proper review may require examining what the proposal form actually asked, what the insured knew at the time, what was disclosed, whether the alleged information was material and whether it relates to the present claim.
Use Tatkal Claims' Health Insurance Claim Rejected for Pre-Existing Disease guide for the broader framework.
Short-Settled Health Claims
If Universal Sompo accepts the health claim but pays less than the amount claimed, request the complete deduction calculation. Review whether the reduction relates to co-payment, deductible, room eligibility, proportionate deduction, sub-limits, exclusions, non-medical items, waiting periods, reasonable-and-customary charges or unsupported deductions.
Use Tatkal Claims' Health Insurance Claim Short-Settled? How to Check and Challenge Deductions guide to review the calculation systematically.
Universal Sompo Motor Claim Disputes
Universal Sompo's current motor page publishes surveyor appointment within 24 hours from claim intimation, survey completion within 24 hours of surveyor appointment, surveyor report within 15 days from the date of survey, and settlement or claim decision within 7 days from receipt of the surveyor report.
These are different stages of the motor claim and should not be represented as one single guaranteed end-to-end settlement period.
Universal Sompo's broader claims FAQ separately states that the surveyor should be appointed within 24 hours from notification and that the claim amount should be settled within seven working days after receipt of final documents. A current motor-product page similarly says the claim is processed within seven working days of the last documents submitted.
This wording differs slightly from the dedicated motor TAT table, which refers to seven days from receipt of the surveyor report. If timeliness itself becomes disputed, preserve the date of claim intimation, date the surveyor was appointed, inspection date, survey-report date, date the final requested document was submitted and date of claim decision.
Accident Repair and Survey Disputes
For a repair claim, obtain the claim intimation, survey assessment, garage estimate, repair invoice, photographs, registration certificate, driving licence, FIR where required, and policy schedule and wording.
If Universal Sompo's approved repair amount is materially below the garage estimate, review the claim item by item. Potential issues include depreciation, compulsory deductible, voluntary deductible, pre-existing damage, non-accident-related damage, consumables, betterment, part replacement versus repair, parts assessment and delayed intimation causing alleged deterioration.
Total Loss and Constructive Total Loss
Universal Sompo states that a vehicle is treated as a Constructive Total Loss when the aggregate cost of retrieval and/or repair exceeds 75% of the vehicle's IDV, subject to the policy terms.
Its motor material also explains that IDV is particularly relevant to theft and total-loss claims. Where a CTL or total-loss decision is disputed, obtain the survey report, IDV shown in the policy, repair estimate, salvage or wreck valuation, policy wording, add-on wording and insurer's calculation.
Use Tatkal Claims' Car Total Loss vs Constructive Total Loss: 75% IDV Rule, Salvage & Claim Settlement guide for the broader framework.
Vehicle Theft Claims
Universal Sompo tells policyholders to notify the police and the insurer immediately when the vehicle is stolen.
For a theft dispute, preserve the FIR, claim intimation, police investigation papers, non-trace or final police report when available, vehicle registration documents, keys, financier documents where relevant and insurer correspondence.
If Universal Sompo says a theft claim is incomplete, ask it to identify every outstanding document in writing.

How to Structure a Strong Universal Sompo Appeal
Start with the policy number, claim number, date of loss or hospitalisation, amount claimed, amount paid if any, and date of rejection or settlement.
Then identify Universal Sompo's rejection clause, medical reasoning, survey conclusion, deduction or missing-document allegation.
Explain why you disagree by connecting the facts and evidence to the policy. For example, the exclusion may not apply, the medical record may not establish the alleged PED, the survey may have omitted accident-related damage, a deduction may not be supported by the policy wording, or a requested document may already have been submitted.
State the remedy you want, such as reconsideration of repudiation, reversal of a specific deduction, the detailed survey assessment, release of an admitted payment, reconsideration of medical evidence or a reasoned written response.
Do not bury the main dispute inside a long emotional narrative.
Escalating Through Bima Bharosa
IRDAI states that a policyholder should first approach the insurer's grievance mechanism, submit the complaint in writing with supporting documents and preserve acknowledgement.
IRDAI's current Bima Bharosa FAQ states that the insurer should resolve the complaint within 15 days of receipt. If the complaint is not resolved within that period or the resolution is unsatisfactory, the policyholder can use Bima Bharosa and IRDAI's grievance channels.
A Bima Bharosa complaint should include the policy, rejection or settlement letter, Universal Sompo grievance, insurer responses, medical, survey or other supporting evidence and calculation of the disputed amount.
See Tatkal Claims' Bima Bharosa vs Insurance Ombudsman guide for the difference between the two escalation mechanisms.
When to Approach the Insurance Ombudsman
The Council for Insurance Ombudsmen states that the policyholder should first complain to the insurer.
You can approach the Insurance Ombudsman if you are dissatisfied with the insurer's response or the insurer has not responded within 30 days, subject to the other eligibility requirements.
The Council currently states that the value of the claim including relevant expenses should not exceed ₹50 lakh, the complaint normally must be made within one year from the relevant rejection or decision or expiry of the insurer's response period, and the same subject matter should not already be pending before or disposed of by another court, consumer forum or arbitrator.
The Ombudsman can consider matters including delays, total or partial repudiation, disputes over policy terms and other covered policyholder grievances.
